Intent

At Shaftesbury Abbey Primary School, we believe art and design are essential to children’s education. Our curriculum develops creativity, critical thinking and an appreciation of diverse artists, cultures and artistic traditions. Through exploring the visual elements of art, children develop their skills, confidence and understanding, enabling them to reach their full potential.

Implementation

Following the AccessArt curriculum, we provide a progressive programme of knowledge and skills across all year groups. Children explore a diverse range of artists, artworks and movements while developing practical skills in drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. High-quality resources, cross-curricular links and opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, including workshops with local artists such as Des Alner, enrich children’s experiences.

Impact

Children develop their artistic knowledge, technical skills and ability to express themselves creatively. They learn to evaluate and refine their work, drawing inspiration from artists across different cultures and periods. Progression across year groups supports children in achieving age-related expectations. Displays and artwork throughout the school celebrate pupils’ achievements, promote pride in their work and reflect the high status of art and design within our school.
